JACKSON NATIVE DIES AT AGE 103
H. Bennett Cobb died Thursday in Heartland Nursing Home after a short illness. He was 103.
He was a native of Jackson County and was a retired dairyman and horseman. He managed several large dairy farms in Kanawha County and was once named Farmer of the Year. At the age of 102 he was living alone in Cross Lanes and was, for the most part, independent.
He was a member of White Plains (Pine) Methodist Church in Jackson County.
Surviving: daughters, Opal Taylor of Tyler Mountain, Mabel Young and Sybil Whetherholt, of Sissonville, Myrtle Gibson of Belle; son, Clair A. of Staunton, Va; 16 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Long-Fisher Funeral Home, Pocatalico, with the Rev. William Layne and the Rev. Delbert Hawley officiating, Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m today at the funeral home.

RIPLEY- Mrs. Lizzie Tolley, 84 – year-old resident of Kenna, Jackson County, died last night at her home after a six month illness.
She was a member of the Methodist church and is survived by her husband, Early; sons, Oras of Kenna’ daughter, Mrs. Elpha Skeen of Kenna; brothers, Theo and Earnest Casto of Belgrove; sisters, Mrs. Anna Hopkins of Harmony and Mrs. Ava Munday of Parkersburg; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Goshen Baptist Church at Kenna by the Rev. D.C. Guthrie, Burial will follow in Goshen Cemetery.

Casto, Maude Ann- 72, of Bellgrove, Jackson Count, died Saturday in her home after a long illness; she was a lifelong resident of Bellgrove and member of White Pine Church there. Surviving are her husband Theodore; four sons, Whitmer and Glenver o Akron, Ohio, Donald of Sissonville and Ray of Charleston; five daughters, Mrs. Syble Harper and Miss Helen Casto t home, Mrs. Mabel Stalnaker of Ripley, Mrs. Allie Fields of Harmony and Mrs. Freda Anderson of Fairplain; three brothers, Dennis Fields of Lewisburg, Robert and Carl Fields of Ohio two sisters, Mrs. Lona Walters and Mrs. Alice Long of Akron, Ohio’ 24 grandchildren. Service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in Parsons Funeral Home at Ripley by Rev. Orville Walker Burial will be in Casto Cemetery at Bellgrove.

KENNA- Mrs. Ora Dell Rhodes, 81 of Kenna, Jackson County, died Sunday at Spencer after a long illness.
She was a member of the Falling Waters United Methodist Church.
Surviving: daughters, Mrs. Ava Raines of Kenna, Mrs. Amy Stine of Estero, Fla., Mrs. Alma Skeens of Sissonville, Mrs. Irma Anderson and Mrs. Geraldine Willard, both of Charleston, Mrs. Gladys Jones of Gandeeville, Mrs. Ivy Crihield of Magnolia, Ohio; sons, Delbert of St. Albans, Denzil of Toledo, Ohio and Denver of Canton, Ohio; brother, Pete Parsons of Crown City, Ohio.
Service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Jackson County. Burial will be in the Fairplain Cemetery at Fairplain.
The body is in the Parsons Funeral Home in Ripley.
LAVINA CASTO, 93, TAKEN BY DEATH
Mrs. Lavina Jane Casto, 93, died at her home at Ripley Saturday night.
She was born at Belgrove, daughter of the late George W. and Elmira Slaughter Casto, and was a member of the Falling Water EUB Church, Belgrove.
Five sons survive; Kenna K. Casto, Nitro, Owen and Hoyt Casto, both of Belgrove, Ernie and Loren Casto, both of Ripley and four daughters, Mrs. Elsie Parsons , Ripley, Mrs. Macel Parsons, Charleston, Mrs. Ethel Staats of Ravenswood, and Mrs. Opal Litton of Gay. There are46 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren surviving.
Services were held Tuesday at the Fail funeral home, Ripley with the Rev. D.C. Gurthrie officiating.
Burial was in the Casto cemetery at Belgrove.

WHITED, Mrs. Mary Jane – Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Gandeeville Methodist church with the Rev. Hobson D. Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Herman cemetery. Mrs. Whited, 93, of Gandeeville, died Friday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Belva Rhodes at Vinton, O. She is survived by 125 descendants including four sons, three daughters, 36 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. The body will be removed to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Minnie Raines at Gandeeville, today at 4 p.m. from Vandale mortuary and to the church one hour before services.

Weatherholt, Mrs. Delia Viola – 78, o 1221 Myers Ave., Dunbar, died Thursday at her home oafter a long illness. Surviving are her husband, Jacob’ two sons, Sattes W. of Sissonville Rd. and Sanford of Memphis, Tenn.; seven daughters, Mrs. Dessie Ranson, Mrs. Bessie Saber, Mrs. Fay Fisher and Mrs. Reba Beane, all of Dunbar. DAWSON, Mary Boothe – 78, of Spencer, died Friday in the residence of a daughter, Miss Anna Fae Dawson of Spencer, with whom she made her home. Death came after an illness of several months. Mrs. Dawson was a member of Falling Water EUB Church in Bellgrove. She was a charter member of the Spencer Chapter of the Eastern Star. Also surviving are another daughter, Mrs. Jessie Gay Kuehne of Houston, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Cora B. Weaver of Toledo, Ohio. Ernest Casto, 69, Kentuck, died Friday in Jackson General Hospital, Ripley
He was born in Jackson county, son of the later Joel and Polly Staats Casto, and was a farmer all of his life. He was a member of White Pine Methodist Church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ada Casto; two sons, Clair Casto, Harmony, and Richard Casto of Madison’ four daughters, Mrs. Esta Parsons, Charleston, Mrs. Laura Hutton, Kentuck, Mrs. Fannie Cobb, Ravenswood, and Mrs. Myrtle Casto, Weston; one brother, Theodore Casto, Kentuck; and two sisters, Mrs. Annie Hopkins, Harmony, and Mrs. Avie Mundy, Parkersburg, There are 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren,

Car Swerves, Kills Woman Mowing Lawn
An out-of-control car yesterday killed 75-year-old Mrs. Lettie Fore as she was mowing the front lawn at her home on Falcon Drive, just beyond the city limits off Sissonville Road.
She was dead on arrival at Charleston General Hospital.
State police charged Bernard Dale Haynes, 19, o Rt. 1, Charleston, with negligent homicide. Haynes was released under $1,000 bond, pending a hearing before Justice of the Peace H. H. Chinn at 3 p.m. , June2.
According to state police, the elderly woman was cutting grass in her front lawn when Haynes lost control of his car while rounding a curve on Falcon Drive.
The car left the road, swerved into the yard and struck Mrs. Fore, police said.
Surviving are sons, Leon of Rt. 1 Sissonville, and Leonard o Ocala, Fla.; and brothers, J.A. Cobb of Charleston and Earl of Tyler Mountain.
The body is at Cunningham Funeral Home.

George A. Cadd, 66,of 5218 Sun Valley Drive, died Wednesday at home after a sudden illness.
He was an operator with FMC Corp., a member of Cross Lanes Bible Church and a 42-year resident of Charleston.

Rufus Cummings, 54, of Kenna, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday of an apparent heart attack.

Raymond K. Casto, 58, of Miami, Fla formerly of Dunbar and Tyler Mountain, died Sunday in Baptist Hospital, Miami, of an apparent heart attack.
He was supervisor for Greyhound Bus Lines in Miami with 35 years of service, and a native of West Virginia.
Surviving: wife, Phyllis White Casto; sons, Stephen L. of Miami, Michael L. of Tyler Heights; father, Lester L. of Tyler Mountain; brother, V.M. (Bud) of Tyler Mountain
The body is being sent to Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

Bolt Victim’s Service Today
Service for Robert Emory Hutton, 70, who was killed by a bolt of lightning as he worked on his farm near Kentuck, Jackson County, Thursday, will be at 1 p.m. today in Goshen Church.
Rev. Arthur Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Goshen Cemetery under the direction of Parsons Mortuary of Ripley.
Father of Delmer Hutton of Ripley, former member of the House of Delegates, Hutton was riding a saddle horse and driving two mules when the lightning struck.
The horse and one of the mules also were killed.
A neighbor, identified by mortuary employees as Joe Critchfield, witnessed the death from his porch.
Hutton was a native of Red House, Putnam County, and lived near Snow Hill in his early years. He had been a Jackson County farmer for a number of years.
Also surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie Carpenter Hutton; two other sons, Herman of Parkersburg and Basil of Kentuck and two brothers, Tom and Frank, both of Charleston.
The body will be taken to the church one hour before service.

HUTTON, Mrs. Sophronia – 78, of 1211 Red Oak St. died yesterday morning in St. Francis Hospital after a long illness. She was a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Putnam County and had lived in Kanawha County the past 26 years.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas Wilford Hutton; a son, Cecil Hutton of Dunbar; six daughters, Mrs. Walter Fields of Clendenin, Mrs. Ethel Mankin of Fostoria, Ohio, Mrs. E.C. Casto and Mrs. H.P. Bucklew, both of Charleston. Mrs. O.B. Boggess of Sissonville, and Mrs. C.B.
